January 23, 2008.
Awakened by a call from my sleep, Mr. Ruben Silva, a fellow Rotarian, informed me that there are 2 thresher sharks in the New Public Market to be traded... So i called FPCI, grabbbed my camera and tape measure, jumped into NEMO and drove to the market. And these were what i got...
Btw, here's the stat of the 2 tsharks:
Big specimen: Total length - 239 cm, body length - 179 cm, girth - 114 cm Small specimen: Total length - 116 cm, body length - 63 cm, girth - 94 cm

 | is hunting of thresher sharks and selling of its meat allowed? |
 | any idea where they caught the sharks? |
 | most of the information i got... they were saying that the sharks were caught in pinamucan area or the areas between matuco pt and tabangao. They were feeding on dompilas or sardine fish. There are lot of stories about matuco pt and one of them was... that area was home to the sharks. (hope i am not scarring you) And that is why we conducted an underwater ocular inspection / exploration last Jan.31. Reports will be submitted tomorrow to the city government and will be conferred to a shark specialist. A memo was issued for a committee to stop and apprehend the trading last Jan 30. I still have to see them move. |
 | Cecille, can there be some public info campaign to stop the hunting of sharks (including thresher sharks) led by the city LGU?
James, Baka naman makakatulong ang diving community to protect not just the species but also the habitats where these sharks can be found. what do you think? |
 | iec is included in the recommendations we submitted and hopefully the committee which is tasked to stop and apprehend these people involved in the catching and trading of the sharks will adopt it. I am praying that they work fast! Actually the funding of the ocular inspection we had came from a private citizen and my pocket. Matagal kasi pag government funds, they rather go into the process na matagal than to see the urgency of the situation or .... sorry taong gobyerno kasi ako at yes, very frustrated.
we always say that conservation and protection cannot be done alone by one person or one agency, the reason why we call the attention of other civic organizations... i am praying that they (gov't) move fast or else, we all turn into fishes as well.... |
 | you know what's funny after i took these pictures? well, i was informed by a staff in OCVAS the following day that my name was reported to the police station for intimidating and harassing the people in the market. Ganun? The pictures speak louder than words... i thought they were smiling and laughing at me. |
 | what did you see during inspection? hope there were still some treshers |
 | gobyerno na ngayon ang may problema... ang tagal ng action. so sad but i have to make a personal appeal to the market people. just this morning, kausap ko ung trader ng sharks and they promised me that they will not sell the sharks anymore. inuubos na lang nila ung stocks kasi d naman mabenta dito talaga ang pating. it took them a week bago talaga maubos at nakita ko rin ung storage nila.
we need to educate our fishermen with regards to the different threatened marine species. grabe, palibhasa e they are so used to seeing this fishes that they cant believe that they are threatened.
the last catch was jan 31 and feb 1. 4 sharks for the 2 days catch. it was discussed in the meeting that the ocvas should go with the boat but it did not happened. e may tao pa rin naman sila who can monitor e. kainis talaga
i submitted the report to the mayor and discussed some impt issues with it. i have to present to the mayor the biology of the thresher sharks and convince him that the tourism office should take the lead in the conduct of the survey since we will be benefitting more from it. kaya lang manpower ang problem ko... but concerted effort naman kasi ito... Sori james ha kung medyo mahaba na. just taking out some steam.
anyway, maybe your group can call our government to make the move fast before it becomes too late... just dont quote me... hehehe. truly, nakakafrustrate ito... |
 | maganda sana if they can pinpoint where shark sightings can be made regularly. a lot of people go all the way to malapascua and pay top dollar just to see the treshers. to think meron pala sa batangas lang. |
 | areas of catching are wawa, sta. clara, pinamucan. they were being seen running (swimming pala) after the dompilas. so feeding time nila iyon. |
 | the aquarium fishermen of san andress, isla verde frequently see the thresher sharks in matuco point that is why we are surveying the area. |
 | i hope you can get more data eventually. havent seen any tresher yet and malapascua is so far and expensive. |

 | huhuhu, i saw them in the market... but thanks for the encouragement... i just hope that the mayor would allow me to organize the survey of our waters... we really need experts and volunteers. |

 | omfg! this is outrageous! i hope you guys can do something about it... excessive fishing is enough, but this is @$%#*)&! |
 | i hope the committee assigned by the Mayor will work fast... pls refer to my reply to james in the blog... another shark story. thanks for the concern. |
 | not related to.....? why cover his face? he might order from these sellers/traders again and sellers/traders orders the fishermen to catch those poor species. better unfold so to stop this BIG fish if he is. shark is a predator and he is the prey not the other way. he feeds on shark? we'll feed him to the sharks if he'll continue. Good JOB! but stop and finish it i'm with you. |
 | Wow! wtf ... these people needs to be educated ... |
 | hi - ton concepcion here- friend of gigi santos - where exactly are the areas that you mentioned - ca you provide a reference point - and lets talk to gigi to see what we can do - by the way - we have a condura race for tubbataha on march 2 - this is to raise awareness to save our reefs - hope to see you there |
 | i don't think he is related to..... (hehehe) well his face will be seen all over the media while caressing the cold bars if he will not stop trading the fins and liver. Lola Gloria will not accept the sharks in the market anymore and i believe her. Thanks so much, you're giving me strength and hope. |
 | yes, i think that is the best way to stop them from hunting the sharks |
 | hi ton, i am sorry i cant provide you the exact location yet. I am still disoriented with the directions. I think i have a map of it and try to post it here. |

 | to everybody: thanks for the help and concern. the task force met this afternoon and had a long discussion on the the thresher shark and the fisherman's welfare. HOORAY!! thank you for those people who called our attention on this matter, (this one is not an easy task) this is a learning experience... we are just beginning but i hope we live up to the expectations of the people and focus on the work. government work is not easy and we hope to be in the right track. (remember balancing act). |
